Green Day
Bio
Lead singer and writer, Billie Joe Armstrong, was born into
a family of modest workers. He had a relatively standard life
with an aspiration to become a musician. He released a
record at the young age of 5 under fiat records when he was
only five. Although he did quite make it as a child start, he
had a future as a punk rocker just waiting for him.
Bass Guitarist Mike Pritchard and Mike Dirnt were friends of
Armstrong's and also had the edge for punk rock.
When the three were 14 they formed their first band called
Sweet Children in California. They added a drummer, Al
Sobrante, and re-named the band, Green Day.
Their first album as a group, Kerplunk, was released and did
not sell as well as they had hoped since they had put in so
many hours. It was at that point that they replaced the drummer
(Sobrante) for current drummer, Tre Cool.
Their next album was released in 1994, Dookie, which sold
over 10 million copies internationally. It also won a Grammy in
1994 for Best Alternative Music Performance.
Punk Rock became quite popular at that point and the band
quickly created a new album which was released in Fall of 1995,
Insomniac. Within the first few months it sold over 2 million
copies but this album was not as popular with the singles as
the last album.
Since then Green Day have released a number of popular
albums; Nimrod, Shenanigans, Warning, American Idiot. Although
none of these have attributed to the same success as their
first album, they are still creating great music that fans just
can't get enough of.
